Beautiful New Model Blackhawk .44 Magnum

I saw this photo posted elsewhere and thought you guys would get a kick out of it. No idea how it happened but wow, talk about a catastrophic failure.

Something other than the firing pin must have ignited the primer. Maybe Wallew will chime in.
I had one just like it. the chambers were fourty thousandths of an inch loose. The rounds rattled when I carried it. It shot OK though.

handloading error.

From the picture it looks like cast lead was the bullet these are usually kept 1000fps or slower. The charges with some powders are less than half the volume of the casing, this would make double charging easier to do. I load a round that looks much like the picture shows, 240 grain bullet.

Just like Floyd said, some one did a double charge. I started to use TrailBoss for low to mid range rounds for my reloading and it fills the case alot better then regular powder. Impossible to double charge, powder will overflow. Blackhawks are very strong handguns, that might have been a triple charge.
Yeap it;s an epic fail :(

I was at a range and about ten feet away when someone did one of those with a .357. Looked almost exactly like that: top strap separated and bent up, top third of cylinder gone. Everyone was very fortunate that the force went upwards and not backwards or sideways.

No distractions while handloading, no booze, no kids running around.

I was thinking along those lines at first, but now I believe the round you're looking at was a secondary explosion, the round on top was aligned with the barrel.

That's what I'm thinking............ughhh, hope the guy didn't sustain a hand injury. :bear_cry:

I always rocked my cylinder on my .44 after reloading to feel the 'detents' and check that there was no misalignment.

Looks like reloaded ammo. So a powder type or powder charge error. Alot? of people want to push the envelope with velocity/power with their reloads. Stupid is as stupid does.
